Brown University Complete Information
International students are an important part of the Brown community. With more than 1,500 international students on campus each year, Brown is one of the most diverse universities in the country. Our commitment to global education has been a cornerstone of our mission since its founding in 1764, and we continue to lead in this area today.
International students come from all over the world–including countries like China, India and Mexico–and represent nearly 100 different countries at any given time during their studies at Brown University. Many have studied English before coming here; others begin learning English as soon as they arrive on campus (or beforehand). All are welcomed into our community with open arms!
Brown is committed to supporting international students. The University has a global mentoring program that matches incoming students with upper-level students to help them acclimate to the campus. In addition, the International Student Association organizes events such as potlucks and movie nights for international students on campus. Finally, Brown's Office of Diversity offers resources for all students--not just those who identify as minorities--to learn about issues related to race and ethnicity in America today.
Getting to know the local community can be challenging for an international student. The Brown International Mentoring Program is here to help! The program matches new students worldwide with Brown alumni willing to give their time and support as mentors.
Mentors provide support through regular meetings over a semester and make themselves available by phone or email whenever needed. In addition to helping you adjust socially and academically, mentors may also offer advice on housing options and other practical matters related to life at Brown (e.g., how best to get around Providence).
