Resumed Undergraduate Education (RUE) Applicants

Brown University Resumed Undergraduate Education (RUE) is a program for students who have been away from Brown for at least five years but want to return. If you’re interested in applying, there are some important things to know:

  • You must have been enrolled at Brown for at least two semesters before leaving. You may not be currently enrolled in another college or University.
  • Only applicants previously admitted to and planned to attend Brown as undergraduate students are eligible to apply.
  • Applicants must also have completed all coursework required by their intended major before leaving Brown and maintain acceptable academic performance while away from the University (2.0 GPA).

Applicants must submit official transcripts from any institution attended during their absence from Brown University.

Eligibility Requirements for RUE Applicants

The Brown RUE application is available to all high school students admitted to Brown University. Applicants must be at least 16 years old by the time of their first term at Brown, and they must have completed their secondary education with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).

Applicants who have received coursework from international institutions are eligible for admission if they meet all other criteria for regular admission and provide documentation demonstrating English language proficiency in addition to meeting our standard requirements for academic preparation as outlined above. International students must also submit official test scores from the TOEFL or IELTS exam .

RUE Application Requirements

  • Application and Resume: You must submit an application, resume, and personal statement with your RUE application.
  • Application Fee: A non-refundable $75 fee is for all applicants applying through RUE. This fee can be paid by credit card online or by check sent directly to Brown University.

Transcripts: All applicants must have official transcripts sent directly from each institution they have attended since high school graduation. If you have heard from multiple colleges/universities, please send all transcripts from each institution, even if they were earned simultaneously or are duplicates of one another (e.g., if you went to college for four years). Please do not mail any sealed envelopes containing these documents; instead, we ask that you provide us with copies so that we may keep them on file permanently in case of future requests for verification purposes.”

RUE Application Process

To apply for RUE, you must be a high school student or have graduated within the last two years. If you are currently enrolled in college, please note that Brown cannot accept concurrent applications during the same admissions cycle.

To apply as an early decision candidate (ED), please register on ERAS by November 1st and submit all required documents by January 15th of your senior year, at least three weeks before we receive your application materials from AMCAS/MCAT/LSAT/DAT/GRE etc., whichever comes first.

Applicants who have already submitted their materials through Early Decision I must wait until February 15th to submit their applications through Early Decision II or Regular Decision if they wish to change their commitment status from EDI-II to RDII or RDIII, respectively.

Please note: if accepted into RUE, it will not affect any other scholarship offers you may have received before being accepted into this program — including full-tuition scholarships offered by other institutions!

Financial Aid for RUE Applicants

Financial aid for RUE applicants is the same as for all other undergraduate applicants. Financial need is determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Financial aid is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis and can cover tuition, room and board, books and supplies, transportation costs or any combination thereof.

Financial aid applications are due by March 1st of each academic year (fall semester), June 30th of each academic year (spring semester), and October 15th of each academic year (summer session).

Housing, Meals and Child Care for RUE Applicants

We encourage you to apply for housing, meals, and child care through our Residential Life Office as soon as possible after receiving your admission letter from Brown University. Applications for these services must be submitted by April 1st each year for us to guarantee your preferences in the housing lottery process; however, we strongly recommend applying earlier than this deadline if possible since it takes some time before all of our residents are confirmed by their schools/programs/employment opportunities outside of Providence during August break weeks before classes start back up again in September (this often means April 1st).

Eligible RUE students with dependents up to the age of six may apply to the Office of Financial Aid for a child care allowance of up to $4,000 per year per household.
