U.S. Military Veterans Requirements

The University of Brown welcomes U.S. Military Veterans who have served in the United States Armed Forces. We recognize your unique challenges as an undergraduate student and are committed to providing the resources you need to succeed at Brown.

The U.S. military veteran is a student at Brown University who has served in the United States Armed Forces. The veteran-student population at Brown has grown steadily over the last several years and currently represents approximately 5% of all undergraduates.

As a community, we are committed to providing support services for veterans on campus so they can pursue their academic and professional goals while feeling welcome here at Brown University.

  • have an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university; and
  • have completed at least two years of full-time postsecondary education since receiving your last degree (you may also be eligible if you're currently enrolled in an approved graduate program).

Eligibility Requirements for U.S. Military Veterans

To be eligible for admission, you must meet the following requirements: Be an honourably discharged U.S. Armed Forces veteran who served in active duty during a war or conflict or was released from active service because of a service-related disability. Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States at the time of application (for international students).

Academic Opportunities for U.S. Military Veterans

Veterans also have access to many academic opportunities at Brown University. In addition to the benefits of being a student, veterans can use their VA education benefits to earn a graduate degree at Brown University. Undergraduate students can participate in research programs or internships through the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP). This program helps students gain practical work experience while developing critical thinking skills and professional networks.

Financial Aid for U.S. Military Veterans

If you are a U.S. Military Veteran, several financial aid options may be available to help cover the cost of your education.

Eligibility requirements: Eligibility for financial aid is determined by both academic performance and financial need. The school considers factors such as GPA, family income and assets when determining how much money they can award each student in scholarships and grants. Some schools have specific programs for military veterans only.

In contrast, others do not have any special categories for this group of applicants but still offer assistance based on their overall qualifications (including service-related injuries).

For example, Brown University offers up to $2 million per year through its Veterans Scholarship Fund, which supports those who served in any branch during wartime; however, students must apply separately from other forms of aid because they are considered “special circumstances.”
