Columbia University is an excellent place for international students. We know college applications can be stressful, but we’ll help you step by step.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible to apply, you must:
- Be at least 18 years old by the beginning of your program.
- Have graduated from high school (or equivalent).
- Have a minimum GPA of 2.5.
- Take either the SAT or ACT exam and earn a score of at least 1000 on each section (reading + math).
If you have been out of high school for more than five years, we strongly recommend retaking both exams to ensure your valid and up-to-date scores for admission consideration at Columbia University. If necessary, please send us official copies of these scores via email or regular mail and your application materials once they are available in late August/early September each year!
Financial Aid and Scholarships for International Students

- Scholarships are available for international students.
- If you need financial aid, you can apply for it as an international student at Columbia University and other schools in the United States.
- If you qualify for financial aid based on your citizenship status, getting help to pay your tuition or living expenses while attending school here in New York City may be possible
Admissions Process
The admissions process at Columbia College is highly selective. To be admitted, students must submit all required materials by the appropriate deadlines and meet specific academic requirements for their intended major.
Students can apply online or in person any time during the year, although applications are accepted on a rolling basis (meaning they are reviewed as they come in). The application consists of:
- An application form that asks for contact information, educational history and other relevant details.
- Letters of recommendation from professors or employers who know you well enough to write an accurate assessment of your traits, abilities and potential as a student and professional. You should ask these individuals beforehand so there’s enough time before the deadline to submit their letters if they agree to write one for you; otherwise, don’t worry too much if no one agrees because it’s better than nothing!
- SAT scores (or ACT scores if available) are sent directly from ETS (Educational Testing Service). If possible, send both scores; however, if this isn’t possible, send whichever is higher since colleges only use one number anyway when reviewing applications.”
