Federal Direct Loans
The interest rate on Direct Loans is fixed for the duration of the loan, regardless of whether the loan is subsidized or unsubsidized, and the government pays it. The annual loan limit is $5,500 for first-year students and $6,500 for sophomores, juniors and seniors.
It would help if you were admitted to a degree-seeking program before you can apply for federal student aid; you’ll need to complete an application called the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). If your family income falls below $50,000 per year (and if you’re independent), you may qualify for a federal Pell Grant up to $5,000 per year — but not all schools offer this grant, so check with them first!
Perkins Loans
Perkins Loans are low-interest loans for students with exceptional financial need. The maximum annual loan amount is $5,500, and the interest rate is 5%. You can borrow up to $27,500 in Perkins Loans over your lifetime.
Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program
The FFEL Program provides loans up to $5,500 annually through banks and other lenders. Interest rates are fixed at 6.8% APR; however, they may increase over time as market conditions change–so make sure you know what kind of interest rate your lender is charging before signing on any dotted lines! Your loan will be repaid over ten years (or longer).
Alternative Loans
Private lenders and banks offer alternative loans. The federal government does not guarantee them, but they allow students to borrow more significant amounts of money than they could with a federal loan. Alternative loans have higher interest rates than federal loans but tend to have fixed rates (which means your interest rate won’t change over time).
Graduate Assistantships at Duke University
Graduate assistantships are a great way to earn money while you’re in school. The university pays Graduate assistants, usually a minimum of $12 per hour, and they receive free room and board. In addition to financial support, graduate assistants also gain valuable experience that can help them land their first job after graduation.
Federal Work-Study Program (FWS) at Duke University
The Federal Work-Study Program (FWS) is a federally funded need-based program that provides part-time jobs to students with financial need. The Office of Financial Aid administers the FWS program, which awards qualifying students with an award letter detailing their eligibility and funding amount.
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must be completed by March 1st each year to qualify.

Students with disabilities can apply for a variety of scholarships, including:
- The Duke University Scholarship Program for Students with Disabilities. Students with documented disabilities may be eligible for this program if they are enrolled at least half-time and maintain satisfactory academic progress. You must also submit proof of your disability by August 1st of each year if you wish to receive funding beyond that term; this application form can be found here.

Duke University is a need-blind institution, meaning your financial aid package will be determined by your demonstrated need. The only exception is for international students who are not citizens or permanent residents of the United States; these students must demonstrate sufficient ability to pay the total cost of attendance before being considered for an award.
In addition, Duke offers a variety of scholarships specifically designed for international students. These awards vary widely in amount and may require additional information about how you plan on using your degree after graduation or other criteria specific to each scholarship program.

Duke University Financial Aid for International Students
Duke University financial aid for international students is available to those who meet the following requirements:
- You are not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, but you are a student currently enrolled in high school and plan to enrol at Duke within one year of graduation.
- If you did not graduate from high school or received a GED certificate, you have at least one year of college coursework.
Duke University requires all international applicants who wish to be considered for need-based aid to complete the CSS PROFILE form and submit it with their application materials by December 1st (or November 15th if they apply for Early Action).
Duke University Financial Aid Eligibility
To be eligible for financial aid, you have to meet specific requirements. The following are Duke University’s financial aid eligibility requirements:
- You must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen (if your parents are not U.S. citizens).
- You must be enrolled in an undergraduate or full-time graduate program at least half-time.
- In addition, international students may need to demonstrate that they have sufficient funds to cover tuition and living expenses while at Duke University.
- The university considers “disproportionate income” more than 50% higher than other families with similar financial situations.
- Students who are married or divorced will be considered on their merit if they apply before July 1st but may need additional documentation by October 1st if married/divorced after that date
Duke University Financial Aid Requirements
Duke University’s financial aid requirements are the same for all students. There are, however, some particular circumstances that may affect your eligibility for need-based aid. If you’re an international student and have been out of high school for less than five years at enrollment, you must also meet additional requirements to be eligible for federal student aid programs such as Federal Pell Grants and Federal Direct Loans (Stafford). These include:
- Students who are independent must be citizens or permanent residents; if you are not yet 18, your parent’s income will count towards your total household size when determining how much money you can receive in federal loans.
- If both parents live together, but their marriage hasn’t been dissolved by court order or divorce decree yet (and therefore aren’t legally separated), then only one parent’s income will be used toward determining whether they qualify as being “independent” financially from each other.
- If only one parent lives with the family unit, then their income alone will determine whether they qualify as being “independent” financially from each other.
- If neither parent lives with them, then no one else’s income counts toward determining whether they qualify as being “independent” financially from each other
Duke University financial aid Eligibility for International Students
Duke University’s financial assistance program is designed to meet the full demonstrated need of admitted students. The need-based award may include grants, scholarships, work-study and loans.
- Grants: Duke has one of the country’s most generous merit-based grant programs. Grant recipients do not have to repay these funds; they are considered gift aid and do not have to be repaid by students or parents.
- Scholarships: Duke offers several scholarship opportunities for international students who wish to attend our university but may only be able to afford it with some financial assistance from outside sources (e.g., family members). These merit-based awards range from $5,000-$40,000 per year depending on your academic achievements and personal circumstances such as socio-economic status or other special circumstances such as ethnicity/race/gender identity etc.
