Duke University is a private research university in North Carolina. The university was established in the year 1838, and it is one of the oldest universities in the United States. It was founded by Methodists and Quakers, who wished to establish a college offering religious and secular instruction. The university gained its name from the building in Durham, where its first classes were held, which was constructed by James Buchanan, a local physician who donated land to the institution along with his slaves to help build the school’s first buildings.
What Are the Courses Offered at Duke University?
The courses are divided into three categories: undergraduate, graduate and professional. Undergraduate students take classes required for their degree program or electives they want to take. Graduate students can choose from courses offered in their field of Study or outside (for example, if you’re studying chemistry but want to learn about biology). Professional programs include medical school and law school courses–and some unique programs like Duke Executive Education offer executive education programs for professionals who still need to gain an advanced degree but want to expand their skill set beyond what they learned in college.

Art History
Art History is the Study of Art and its history. It is a subfield of Art, which is a liberal arts field.
Art History is also a subfield within Art History, which itself can be defined as “the study of objects from all periods.”
Asian and Middle Eastern Studies
The Asian and Middle, Eastern Studies department offers a B.A., MA, PhD and certificate. The department has over 50 faculty members who teach courses on the languages, cultures and history of Asia and the Middle East.
The curriculum is designed to provide students with an understanding of how societies develop in response to historical forces; it also prepares students for careers as international business executives or government officials involved with foreign policy issues, such as trade relations between nations or global security issues, such as terrorism prevention.
The department offers several different degree programs, including B.A. in Asian & Middle Eastern Studies (AMES); AMES concentration within Duke’s Religion Department; AMES concentration within Duke Divinity School’s Master’s Program in Divinity Leadership & Ministry Track; MALD program, which provides advanced language training alongside coursework in area studies focused on modern-day Iran/Persia history & culture.
Biology
Biology is the science of life and living systems, including their physical structure, chemical processes and development. It encompasses a wide range of scientific disciplines closely related to one another. For example:
- Botany is the Study of plants (botany).
- Zoology is the scientific Study of animals (zoology).
- Microbiology is the branch of biology that studies microscopic organisms such as bacteria and viruses.
Biology has many subdivisions within its major disciplines, including genetics; physiology; biochemistry; cell biology; developmental biology; molecular biology; ecology; evolution.
Chemistry
Chemistry is a science that studies the composition, structure, properties and change of matter. Chemistry is one of the oldest sciences, with roots dating back to ancient civilizations such as China and Egypt.
Chemistry is also considered a branch of physics because it involves studying matter and energy in terms of their interactions at atomic and molecular levels. However, chemistry differs from physics in its focus on chemical reactions rather than on particles like electrons or photons, which make up atoms (particles) themselves.
Classical Studies
Classical Studies is a field of Study that encompasses the languages, literature, history, Art and archaeology of the ancient Mediterranean world from the emergence of Writing in the late 4th millennium B.C. to the coming of Islam in the 7th century A.D.
Classical Study is an interdisciplinary field which draws on materials from many disciplines, including Classics (Greek & Latin), Ancient History & Archaeology (Egyptian), Art History (Greek vase painting), Musicology/Ethnomusicology, as well as Linguistics/Comparative Literature etc.
Creative Writing
Creative Writing
Creative Writing is a course that introduces students to the craft and theory of writing fiction and poetry. The class will use a variety of texts as models, including short stories by Kafka, Chekhov, and Coetzee; poems by Stevens and Bishop; novels by Faulkner and O’Connor; essays on literary theory by Nabokov. Students will read these works carefully, analyze them in detail, write articles exploring their writing process and creative work-in-progress (if they choose), participate actively in class discussion–and have fun doing all this!
Economics, Public Policy and Management Program
The Economics, Public Policy and Management Program (EPPM) is a joint degree program offered by the Fuqua School of Business and the Sanford School of Public Policy. Students in this program spend two years in each school before graduating with a bachelor’s degree from Fuqua and a master’s degree from Sanford.
The focus for EPPM students is on understanding economic theory and policy analysis tools and how these ideas apply to real-world situations. You’ll learn about microeconomics, macroeconomics and statistics and develop your ability to use these concepts when deciding public policy issues such as healthcare reform or climate change mitigation strategies.
You can apply directly to this program if you already have an undergraduate degree or are currently enrolled at Duke University but still need to complete all requirements for graduation (in which case we will accept applications after May 1st).

Environmental Law and Policy Program
The Environmental Law and Policy Program (ELPP) is a joint program between Duke Law School and Sanford Public Policy. Students can earn a Master of Laws (LLM) degree in Environmental Law and Policy by taking courses at both schools.
ELPP’s curriculum offers students an interdisciplinary approach to understanding environmental law and policy issues through coursework, research opportunities, externships, field trips and other activities.
Applications for the program are accepted once per year–for fall admission only–with deadlines in December for domestic students and March for international applicants.
French, Italian and Portuguese Studies
French, Italian and Portuguese Studies is a program that offers a wide range of courses in the languages, literatures and cultures of France, Italy and Portugal. Students from all fields of Study are welcome to apply to this program.

Medieval Studies (M.A.)
The Medieval Studies Program is an interdisciplinary program that draws on the resources of the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. The program is designed for students interested in the Middle Ages, including its literature and history; culture; religion; Art; music; architecture; languages (including Old Norse); and folklore. Courses offered in this program include “The Idea of Europe” (history), “Medieval Women Writers” (literature), “Late Antiquity through the Early Middle Ages” (history) and more.
Musicology (MM)
You might think that musicology is an obscure field, but it’s one of the most popular majors at Duke. The reason is apparent: musicologists study everything from how to play an instrument to how music affects our moods and emotions.
The discipline has a broad range of areas of interest, which makes it attractive to people who want to work in many different areas. For example, if you’re interested in writing about classical composers or rock bands from long ago, historical musicology may suit you (and your future employer). If, instead, your passion lies with modern pop stars like Taylor Swift or Justin Bieber, then ethnomusicology could be just what you need (and again–your future employer).
Neuroscience (PhD)
Neuroscience is the Study of the nervous system, including how it processes information and controls behaviour. Duke’s neuroscience program is ranked #1 in the country by U.S. News & World Report, and it offers both master’s degrees and PhDs in this field of research.
Neuroscience students must complete at least two years of coursework before beginning their dissertation research; they must also pass an oral qualifying exam at some point during their studies (which can take up to three years). Students who want to do well in this program must be prepared for an intense workload full of hard work and dedication! While there are no set requirements regarding GPA or GRE scores when applying for admission into Duke University’s graduate program in Neuroscience, applicants should expect high numbers from both areas if they want any chance at getting accepted into such an elite institution like Duke University itself!
