Northwestern University is a private research university in Evanston, Illinois. The school has many libraries that serve its students and faculty. The University Library contains millions of books and journals, while the Deering Library provides a beautiful space for studying and research. Other libraries at Northwestern include the Math Library and Mudd Library for science-related scholars and professional libraries that support particular fields of study at the university.

University Library

The University Library is located at 633 East Chicago Avenue in downtown Chicago. It's open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday and from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. The library is also available weekdays until 9:30 pm during the fall and spring semesters.

The library has many services available for students, staff members, faculty members and alumni who want to conduct research or study in one of its many collections. For example:

  • Reference librarians can help you find books in print or e-books that match your topic(s) of interest;
  • Digital resources like JSTOR provide access to articles from hundreds of journals published since 1970;
  • WorldCat provides access to millions of books held by libraries around the globe (including Northwestern University Library);

Deering Library

Deering Library is located at 1101 Chicago Avenue in Evanston, Illinois. It’s open to the public Monday through Friday from 7:30 am to midnight and on Saturdays from 9:00 am until 6:00 pm. Deering also houses special collections not found in other campus libraries, including archives of the former Board of Trustees records (1855-1905) and over 2 million items related to Northwestern University history and alumni life.

Math Library

The Math Library provides resources and services for the math faculty, students and staff. It is located on the first floor of the Shapiro Library. The hours are 8:00 am to 11:00 pm Monday through Thursday; 8:00 am to 9:00 pm Friday; 10:00 am – 5:00 pm Saturday; and 1:30 pm – 5 hours before the start of finals week (generally three days before Finals Week).

The Math Library has a collection of more than 130,000 titles, including books, journals, CD-ROMs, DVDs and government documents. In addition, many electronic databases can be accessed from any location via your Northwestern University NetID credentials (see below).

Mudd Library

Mudd Library is located at 1211 East 60th Street, Chicago, IL 60637. The library’s hours are Monday-Thursday, 10 am-8 pm; Friday, 10 am-5 pm; Saturday, 9:30 am-4 pm; Sunday, 1 pm-4 pm.

Mudd Library offers a variety of services for students and faculty members, including:

  • Wireless internet access (for both personal laptops and mobile devices)
  • A computer lab with scanners and printing capabilities
  • Quiet study areas with computers available for use by all students on a first come, first served basis

Professional Libraries

Northwestern has a variety of libraries, including those for students and staff. The libraries include:

  • The Library at the Feinberg School of Medicine is one of the largest academic medical libraries in the United States. It is one of only two national Centers for Biomedical Research Information (CBI) designated repositories for clinical trial data from NIH-funded studies.
  • The Robert Roesch Library at Northwestern University houses more than 4 million volumes in its collection and has three locations across campus–one each in Evanston and Chicago’s Near North Side neighbourhoods and another at O’Hare International Airport (ORD).

Northwestern University has many libraries. The University library system is spread across campus, with libraries offering different services and collections. The hours of operation vary by location. Some libraries have staff members available to help you with research questions, while others do not have staff but rather rely on volunteers who can answer questions when they are available.

  • Main Campus Library – This is the main library on Northwestern’s Evanston campus, located near other large buildings such as Kresge Auditorium and Norris Center for Theatre Arts (formerly Tech Theatre).

Wieboldt Hall – Located next door to Chicago City Hall in downtown Chicago, this historic structure was built in 1885 by Charles Wieboldt (hence its name). It houses over 2 million volumes within its walls, including rare books about architecture history and prints from artists such as Albrecht Durer.
