Ways to Apply Using a Fee Waiver

To apply for a fee waiver, you can fill out the FAFSA. You can also apply for one through your Northwestern University application. In addition, if you were placed or adopted from foster care and meet certain requirements, you may qualify for a fee waiver. You may also be eligible if your family receives public assistance such as TANF or SNAP benefits (formerly known as food stamps). A fee waiver allows you to apply for free, while scholarships are awards that require additional paperwork and may require you to submit financial information.

You can apply for a fee waiver by filling out the FAFSA. The FAFSA form allows you to apply for federal financial aid, including grants, work-study and loans. Colleges and universities also use it to determine your state eligibility and institutional aid programs (i.e., scholarships).

The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.gov and must be submitted anytime between January 1 and March 2 of each year to qualify for aid during the upcoming academic year (fall semester). You must provide your social security number when filling out this form, so make sure it’s accurate!
